Hollow Knight: Silksong's release was so big that it crashed all four of the major storefronts it launched on yesterday morning. Even Nintendo struggled with the indie behemoth's arrival, but despite that, the Hollow Knight sequel has shot to the top of the Switch 2 chart, seemingly becoming the first non-Nintendo game to achieve that feat since the new console launched.
Stealth40k has shared a screenshot of the Switch 2 eShop chart, showing that Silksong has managed to dethrone Donkey Kong Bananza. That placement may vary depending on where you are in the world, but I can confirm here in the UK, Silksong is also the best-selling Switch 2 game at the time of typing this.
Hollow Knight: Silksong Is Doing Something On Switch 2 That Only Nintendo Games Have Managed So Far
According to charts shared by Nintendo Everything, only Nintendo-published games have topped the Switch 2 eShop chart between the console's launch in June until now. Mario Kart World led the charge for the first four weeks until handing off the baton to Donkey Kong Bananza. The hit 3D platformer held on to the number one spot for six weeks before being outdone by Kirby and the Forgotten Land, first by its full Switch 2 upgraded game, and then more recently by the upgrade pack.
Bananza sneaked back into the number one spot earlier this week, but Silksong has swiftly put a stop to that before the weekly numbers could be tallied up. While it's already the first game not published by Nintendo to sit atop the chart, based on the massive sales it has achieved on Steam, it seems likely that the Hollow Knight sequel will be the top of the pile for the week, too, with no clear sign of where the same's sales ceiling might be.
Deltarune was seemingly the best-selling game on Switch 2 for June, but it seemingly didn't manage to top the eShop like Silksong has on its first day.
Looking ahead, it's not entirely clear which upcoming game might be the one to take the Switch 2 eShop crown back from Silksong. Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds could have a big enough impact, and then you've got Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles and Borderlands 4 after that. My guess, though, is that unless Bananza takes back the lead, the next game to top the chart will be Pokemon Legends: Z-A in October.
Despite the problems across all platforms when it launched, it seems likely Silksong is pulling huge numbers across the board. As well as shooting straight to the top of the Switch 2 chart, the sequel pulled in more than half a million players on Steam alone within hours of its release. It already has the second-highest concurrent player count on the platform of any indie game ever.
